தொழிலின் எழில்

     {1st May 2021}

அகத்தின் விலாசம் முகத்தில் முட்டும்.

திகட்டா தரிசனம் தெய்வமென் றாகும்;

சிகரம் நோக்கி  சிந்தைகள் குவிந்திட,

நகரும் முயற்சிகள் நாட்களை உயர்த்தும்.

உழைப்பினை  உதறிடின்,உதிரம் ஊறுமோ?

தழைப்பது எல்லாம் துளிர்விடும் தரமே!.

கழித்திடு,அரித்திடும் காளான் அனைத்தும்;

May Day Melodies

    {1st May 2021}

For the human race,either work is worship,

Or worship is valued as a valid form of work.

Work or worship,each has its power of whip,

To seize the mind,that trails or tries to shirk.

When the mind is well set to warp great ideas,

Success stories soar like flames from the fuel.

The body and mind correct their conjugal chaos,

To liberate the drops of sweat,from hands cruel.

If work is viewed as labour,love for work is lost.

If labour is loved,each drop of sweat falls down,

Like summer rains sucking heat,for a shelter spot.

Fruits of labour enthrone the earth,with a crown.

May day melodies are born of the world's wield,

To sow,grow and gift labour,with its richest yield.

The Timely Torch

    {Tribute to my Departed Teacher Prof. S.Albert}

Teachers are many because many can teach.

How many are there within students' reach?

A teacher as a friend is our life's lofty boon;

One who feels our pulse and frames its tune.

From books to the board,knowledge travels.

Only a probing mind binds both and unravels,

The mystery behind the mind's mystic mould,

That keeps digging for treaures to one's hold.

You felt my pulse and pruned its trembling throbs

And trimmed my temper for a battle against my sobs

You made me breathe deeper into my soul to seek

The blooming fragrance of the unseen,arcane peak.

You always held the timely torch to see,search and sense

The tip and depth of the concrete and abstract substance.

A lot more is there to churn out your fineness and glory,

From the long years of our teacher student,friendship story.

இரட்டைத் தாழ்ப்பாளில்

இருளே இரண்டானது.

நீ கையொப்பமிடும்

English Grammar,a Grandma Story.

   Grammar today,is almost like the grandma,not only because of the pronunciation of the two words with a kind of confusing similarity,but also because,grammar is looked upon as an old stuff like grandma,only to be respected,but not to be followed,due to generational differences in aspiration,aptitude and achievement of goals.

  It is one's schooling that plants the grammar of one's language with its roots grooved to the base.Until five decades ago,parsing{classification and interpretation of words in relation to their grammatical implications}played a key role in implanting the grammar ingredients of English,into one's brain.But today'parsing'would mean like 'farcing' and will be heard only as'passing.'

  English language being the richest legacy left by the colonial British era,India initially stuck to the basics of the language,for learning it in a flawless manner,both in speech and writing.English teachers were once the most formidable figures in all the schools from the primary to the secondary levels.The cane in the hands of an efficient English teacher,was the wand that performed miracles in letting the wards learn the rules of English grammar,before they left the school,after completion of their secondary schooling.

  The importance of grammar ruled the enitire process of honing every learner's listening,speaking,reading and writing skills,briefly notified as LSRW.But today LSRW means Laugh,Speak,Revel and Wrestle with the communication network.The internet world whose objectives are speed and solution for vital global issues without loss of time,is looking for a minimal impact of grammar on the use of English,with a view to attaining projected goals through inter personal connectivity,by pruning the puritanical feathers of the languge in use.

  The world is presently witnessing a kind of disorder with a semblance of order. William Butler Yeats in his famous poem"The Second Coming" wrote

"Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart;the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world".

 The absence of order is a serious crisis felt everywhere,including the court premises where the judge often has to strike the wooden hammer saying"order order".So the most logical perception now is,when there is little order all around,why should  grammar alone have word order(syntax) in a sentence.Travelling along the track of Lady Macbeth,who said"A little water clears us of this deed"the language user could very well say,a little meaning( semantics)will remove the stain of stabbing syntax.

  In a similar vein,the grammatical 'itch' for tense perfection in the use of verbs, is considered to be the biggest irony of life because,the present is bleak,the past is meaningless and the future is absolutely uncertain.Above all when nobody is'perfect' here,why bother about the so called'perfect tense',that raises inquisitive queries about the use of time in language transmission.

  Today the two trendy thumb rules of English are,1}Talk/speak to be understood.2} Write the way you talk/speak.As a funny instance,instead of asking"Santhome Church which way please?"if someone asks"Sir/Madam! Can you please tell me which one of these roads will take me to the Santhome Church?",by the time the question is completed,the person addressed to,would have left the scene.It is commonsense that prevails over rules of grammar and commonsense says,"brevity is the soul of wit"

  As children,many of us would have come across grammar sessions on types of sentences.Who bothers now about these types,because each one is a type in their own way and talk their type of sentences,that could be easily tracked by the listener. Assertions are of course there,but only to cleverly avoid memories of what an assertive sentence is!.The word interrogation is mostly familiar with the police personnel and their wild catches.Even otherwise,who would trouble themselves to remember the two types of interrogative sentences and the way they are framed.As life's imperatives are difficult to follow,remembering imperative sentences is a futile exercise.Exclamations have a tie up with the snobbery clubs,where the users of exclamations express'awe!' 'oh!' 'woe'! and'wow'!as mechanical vibrations of the vocal cords.

  We were all taught about the importance of two voices{not the mind voice and the mouth voice}viz:-Active Voice and Passive Voice,in grammar.But now we only know that men are'active'outside but'passive'at home,with their voices willing to be active but wantonly remaining passive.These days,even the voices of the social and envirnmental activists are supressed to stay passive.It is always safer to resort to expressions such as"it is believed"and" it is understood"instead of saying'I believe'or 'I undersrand' that could be branded as exhibition of arrogance.So the voice of grammar is far from being active.

   Now coming to simple,complex and compound sentences,many would have had a tough time with this quixotic predicament of English grammar,like the murky ghosts of mathematics,in the form of algebra and trigonometry.Strangely,one may feel that they have the right to tranform their simple life into complex and compound proportions,but would be never ready to transform a simple sentence into complex/ compound sentence and vice versa.

  The'If clause'has always been an irritant with its probable,improbable and impossible conditions.In fact,everyone in an improbable way,would happily say,"If I were a student now,I would certainly crack the skull of my English teacher,for having played hell with my student days,in the name of grammar".'Articles'are confined to the consititution and'prepositions'exist only as indicators of the preceding positions of power.The word'tag' exists only in Facebook,for tagging in friends,but not as'question tags'any more.

  As far as'degrees of comparison' is concerned,everybody is bothered only about how to get their'degrees'without their parents'comparing'them to their friends and peers. Now owing to the perturbing pandemic,the word'positive'sounds like death knell. Comparatives make their popular rounds,in the vaccine zone.Superlatives make sense to know which country is worst hit,by the contagion.While synonyms are welcome as 'sympathizers',antonyms are looked down upon,as provocative opponents against the treasury benches.

  All said and done,what is wrong in getting words scripted in alphabet form as U for 'you'R for 'are',TX for Thanks and so on,and as abbreviations like OMG replacing 'Oh My God'!Sentences like 'Are you Ok?'have shrunk into'U, OK?'It is a shrinking universe.We all come together to gesticulate more,than to articulate language.The grandma's stories are there only to make us go to sleep.So is the grammar of any language and English is no exception to this.

The War of Vaccines over a Pandemic

   We are living in agonising times,because the crematoriums are getting crowded with corpses,and the sports grounds are doing their empty rounds.In Bhopal,people are  rewinding now,the nightmarish event,that devoured many lives,as a fall out of the gas leakage tragedy at the Union Carbide India Ltd.In Uttarpradesh,cremation grounds are being covered with tin sheets either to prevent public view of the colossal deaths happening every day,or to save people from being infected. People die at all times either in bulks or in pieces,due to various reasons.But to die in large numbers,due to the curse and consternation of a contageon,is certainly an avoidable tragedy,though how to avoid it is a mind boggling question.

  While the origin of the pandemic may have its own murky layers made up of either ecological eventualities or evil manipulations,it is certainly a blow of horror  that has virulently gripped almost the entire globe.From the big powers to the impoverished nations,death has proved to be the leveller.Ironically,human response and behavioural reactions during the Covid 19 invasion,are sometimes more depressing than the disease itself.

  It makes every sensible person ask questions such as,why not the people around the world be a little more proactive in being protective;why not governments set aside politics for a while;why not the crowd mentality take a holiday for some time and above all why not the principles of globalization serve its purpose at least during these gruesome days.The international trade control machinery can very well streamline the supply of vaccines,instead of letting the big Pharma firms make unethical,profiteering  calculations,in the name of of Intellectual Property Rights.

  I believe the emergence of globalization in the Nineteen Nineties was seen as the dawn of world countries coming together to play an even game in trading under neutrality norms,envisaged through the eyes of the World Trade Organisation.An even game is that which does not make the biggies small,but lifts the developing economies to have their voices heard for upgrading their trade margins,for a higher growth.But the dawn still remains a dark patch.

   Under normal circumstances,the international trade governing forums could be forgiven for being meek spectators of the still uneven trade path,between the developed and developing nations.But in an extraordinary situation like the one prevailing now,is it not the duty of such world bodies to regulate the mood of greed for making huge gains over vaccines and rectify the suffocating situation that prevails?

  Though the common man may not be aware of the vaccine war and the game of supremacy played by a section of the big pharmaceutical companies,the fact is that a huge section of the world population stays more perplexed by the stories about efficacy and complications of vaccines,than about the competitive pricing labels and the availability logistics.

   Now trade has triggered a vaccine war, fleecing the world population,even as the pandemic is claiming lives like tsunami.It is high time the World Trade Organisation comes out with an instant agenda for an even distribution of all vaccines,at affordable price to all counties,so that the alarming calamity is not further allowed to eat away a major chunk of humanity.Otherwise,it would only be presumed that the pandemic was born of the human greed for trade profits and the ongoing vaccine war is a corollary of that greed.

சித்திரைச் சிறகுகள்

            {இனிய சித்திரைத் திருநாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள்}

நித்தமும் நன்மையை நாடிப் பறந்து,

சித்திரை வந்தது சிறகுகள் விரித்து;

உத்தம குணங்கள் உலகில்  நிறைந்திட,

நித்திரைக் கனவும்  நல்லதே காணும்!

பத்திய உணவில் பதியாப் பசியென,

சித்தம் விலகுமாம்,சிறுமைச் சிந்தனை;

From the Bin

Each one files a bunch of new styles,

To enhance a better reach of their profiles.

Like a selfie taken every other day,

Life uploads images to update itself.

What accumulates,looms into a load

Necessitating a self-made load shedding.

Musty moments,become mocking spots,

Twisting profiles to look literally aghast.

But the Narcissus in man,is a naughty stuff,

Lifting profiles from the trash for pruning,

As delectable delights of the proud present.

When Memory recycles profiles from the bin,

It lets the self swell,with sabbatical pride,

Foregoing the stench of the dust on profiles.

The present in ripeness,taunts the trash release,

Like the soul sneering at the body,out of its lease.

If the past is a ghost,the present is the toast.

Stills from the bin,are a piggy back to boast.

Democracy on Transition Paths

   We can not say democracy in India,is in danger.No.Not yet. But it is visibly symptomatic of passing through a torrid transition syndrome,propelled by those who are power hungry and who want to spread their intimidating tentacles of power,to every nook and corner.Power is crazy to rule and rule alone,not much with the goodness to govern,but to govern with unquestionable authority,by conquering the power sharing principle,towards gaining overall control of the dissemination of power.

    Democracy with its cliched interpretation of "of the people,for the people and by the people"makes no sense for those,who are power centric to rule with unopposed power. In a similar vein,it can be said that democracy without effective opposition can not be considered to be meaningful,on account of the policy paralysis and lack of credible presence of unity and collective responsibility among the opposition parties.Unless and until the body called the opposition,goes under clinical diagnosis and retrieval treatment process,healthy democracy is a far cry for India.

  It can be categorically stated that the major and the once nationally most relevant political party,suffers more than others, from serious self destructive, internecine groupism and want of unifying leadership.The other opposition parties have been losing ground by their own weakening projections and void of ideologies.The absence of a convincing and commanding opposition, signals the absence of democracy.

  The transition times of democracy have opened the doors for the exit of rightful devolution of power.Wherever the toes of centralized power are not followed by 'democratic footsteps',dictating fingers pick up swift action against them,by invoking newer devices of power control,to pull every one to toe the line,in order to instituitionally install the pan India programme.

  How does this power expansion  programme happen? Does it happen by disciplining those who are indisciplined,in the name of freedom? No not at all. Power expands by favouring,purchasing and threatening  the erring blocks,as well as by cutting down the limbs of those,who cannot be tamed.This cutting course is executed through imposition of bills of power, for an extraneous control of the elected body,thereby causing insult to the electorate and hurting the dignity of the entire electoral system.It is here the transition of democracy into dictatorship begins.The creation of extra limbs of power,makes the elected  poles of power,futile and frustrated.

  While violation of personal freedom norms leads to anarchy,encroachment of the right to privacy and freedom and infringement of the rights of an elected body,sow the seeds for endangering the very power fabric and its governing integrity.In fact,it is integrity in governace that lays the stepping stone to national integration.

  The reasons for the creation of extra constitutional limbs of power may be many.Two predominent but paradoxical reasons could be (1) the arrogance to rule all,by increasing the length and width of the power margins and/ or( 2) the fear of losing the power gained,after a prolonged period of waiting.

  The second reason might be closer to reality than the first,because only those who have waited for power for quite long,know the value of power and the imperative need for strengthening and sustaining the channels of power,without giving any room for even an accidental loss of their power perceptions.Power born of fear of losing power,is more precarious than any conferred form of power,because it speeds up the transition of democracy to despotism.

  A similar transition in democracy occurred in India in the mid Nineteen Seventies, when the then Prime Minister declared a state of emergecy,that lasted for a period of twenty one months between 1975 and 1977.In a big onslaught on democracy,elected state governments were dislodged from power and opponents were maltreated under the clutches of the Maintenance of Internal Security Act {MISA}.

  But in the midst of many undesirable events,several good things also happened during that period.Some of them were,abolition of Privi Purses and nationalisation of banks.Work culture improved in everybody either in order to comply with the expectations of the government,or to avoid punitive measure from the government. Subsidised food was available to all and the people in general,did not feel too much,the pinch of their purse.But democratic values did undergo the acid test,through suppression of opposing voices and active sterilization programmes carried on by a section of the authoritarian mode of governance.

  If we can say dislodging elected governments under article 356 is an anti democratic move,introducing bills to create super imposition of powers,to contol elected governments which are not politically amenable,is an equally undemocratic move to clip the wings of democratic governance.Besides this,ill timed,motivated raids against rivals,also betray unfair and foul means,to abuse power to the extent of undermining the principles of democratic governance.

  When opportunism and bias blind political vision,falsehood takes the driver's seat,steering the wheels of power to wrong roads and taking clear diversion from democratic destinations.It is at this juncture,the transition path reaches dead ends and real danger shrouds the body of democracy.

    Note:- No names of individuals or political parties mentioned in this article.
